Azerbaijan's Energy Diplomacy and Western Competition over Caspian Gas
Tavola rotonda nell'ambito del programma di ricerca "Italy, the EU and the South Caucasus"
The seminar will address the implications and challenges for Western efforts to diversify energy supplies and, in particular, the perceptions and prospects of the Nabucco, South Stream, ITGI, and TAP pipelines.
What are the prospects for the construction of the Trans-Caspian pipeline to be linked to Nabucco? The Nabucco pipeline consortium has postponed its investment decision by another year. What are the reasons behind this decision? How far is this decision linked to Gazprom's counter-proposal on South Stream? Are the planned pipelines competing projects or have they been turned as such by the geopolitical interests of external actors? What is the balance between geopolitical and commercial rationales underpinning these western projects? Furthermore Russia declared its readiness to purchase the whole volume of the Shah Deniz II field. Will Azerbaijan opt for the Russian or Western option to diversify its gas exports?
