Joost Lagendijk (1957) è nato in Olanda e si è laureato in storia presso l'Università di Utrecht. Per dieci anni è stato editore di libri di saggistica.
Dal 1998 al 2009 è stato parlamentare europeo per il Partito dei verdi olandese. Nel parlamento europeo si è occupato in particolare di politica estera e allargamento. Per molti anni ha presieduto la Commissione Turchia presso il parlamento europeo ed è stato rapporteur per il parlamento sui Balcani e sul Kosovo.
Assieme al collega del parlamento europeo Jan Marinus Wiersma, Lagendijk ha scritto tre libri (in olandese) sui confini d'Europa, sulle strategie di politica estera degli Stati uniti e dell'Unione europea nei confronti dei paesi vicini a maggioranza musulmana (tradotti in inglese e turco).
Nel 2013 ha pubblicato, assieme alla moglie Nevin Sungur un libro (in olandese) dedicato alla Turchia moderna dal titolo Arrivano i turchi!
Dal 2009 al 2012 ha lavorato come senior adviser presso l'Istanbul Policy Center, un think thank dell'Università Sabanci a Istanbul.
Dal 2010 è editorialista per i quotidiani turchi Zaman e Today's Zaman.
Joost Lagendijk (1957) was born in the Netherlands and graduated as a historian from Utrecht University. He was a publisher of magazines and non-fiction books for ten years.
From 1998 till 2009 Mr. Lagendijk was a Member of the European Parliament (EP) for the Dutch Green Left Party. In the parliament he mainly worked on foreign policy and EU enlargement. For many years he was the chairman of the Turkey Delegation of the EP and the rapporteur for the parliament on the Balkans and Kosovo.
Together with his colleague from the EP Jan Marinus Wiersma, Mr. Lagendijk wrote three books (in Dutch), on the borders of Europe, on the foreign policy strategies of the US and the EU and on European policy towards its Muslim neighbours (translated into English and Turkish).
In 2013 he published, together with his wife Nevin Sungur, a book (in Dutch) on modern Turkey under the title The Turks Are Coming!.
From 2009 till 2012 Mr. Lagendijk worked as a senior adviser at the Istanbul Policy Center, the think tank of Sabanci University in Istanbul.
Since 2010 he is a columnist for the Turkish dailies Zaman and Today’s Zaman.
