In winter Lake Çıldır, eastern Turkey, freezes over. Nonetheless, fishing continues. Over time it has also become a tourist attraction. A photo story
Çıldır Lake in eastern Turkey is located between the provinces of Kars and Ardahan. The ice begins to form in December until it reaches a significant thickness. Many of the people who live in this area are fishers. With picks and shovels they create holes in the ice where they can throw nets. After a day or two of waiting they collect them. This area once belonged to the tsarist empire, and in 1945 it was reclaimed by the Stalinist revision of borders after the First World War.
