A portmanteau word of “edit” and “marathon”, Edit-a-thon is an organised editing event featuring a bottom-up collaborative experience of knowledge production, where editors work together to improve specific contents on Wikipedia.

The Wiki4MediaFreedom event aims at fostering new alliances between media freedom activists, journalists and the Wikipedia and open knowledge communities to boost the availability of accurate knowledge on media freedom and pluralism-related issues in the largest open enciclopedia worldwide.

INFOGRAPHIC!

Croatian journalists voice concern over the increasing pressure they face while carrying out their work, encompassing both verbal and physical attacks. Moreover, several reports, including follow-ups by international monitoring visits, have driven attention to the negative impact of criminal defamation and impunity for crimes against journalism, while also warning against government interference in the public broadcaster activities. This infographic presents and elaborates some of the aspects raised by different organizations working to support media freedom

Although media freedom is anchored in European countries' constitutions, media workers are encountering many threats and risks while doing their job. The Journalists-in-Residence (JiR) Programme of the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) offers a special opportunity to threatened media freedom activists and journalists. For up to 12 months, a media worker at risk can take a time-out from the direct threat he or she is facing in the home country. The ECPMF provides a safe home, a scholarship and many other forms of support as well as the possibility to work at the centre in Leipzig. Until 8 November 2016, media workers from EU- and pre-accession countries can apply for the programme.

A new version of our web portal is now online! TransEuropa and a responsive web design are the main novelties.

We have decided to add TransEuropa to our name to convey our bottom-up commitment for Europe to become a common political space of mediation, democratic, informed and participatory. In our view, the contribution of civil society networks is crucial to the consolidation of the European public sphere and to the democratization of international politics.

We also have a new cover for our content. It is new from a visual point of view, but above all, it is technically improved. Our website now has a responsive design, conceived to automatically adapt to all navigation devices (PC, tablet, smartphone). All that and much more, which we hope will meet your interest!

World Press Freedom Day 2016 - #WPFD2016

On May 3rd, the fundamental principles of press freedom are celebrated around the world. It is an opportunity to recall the crucial role of the right to information for any democratic society, and the need to protect and promote media freedom and the safety of journalists who can act as public watchdog in the citizens' interest.

OBC is taking part to this endeavour through the project European Centre for Press and Media Freedom. During the last year, OBC supported the circulation of information on media freedom in 11 languages with a network of 13 media partners in South East Europe and Turkey, promoted access to relevant information by launching the Resource Centre on Media Freedom and enriched Wikipedia entries on media freedom and pluralism in Europe with the project Wiki4MediaFreedom.
